Mandatory Entry-Level Training for Class 1 Licence
Mandatory training is required for drivers who want to obtain their Class 1 driver's licence. You must complete an approved Class 1 Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT) course before booking your road test to operate a semi-trailer truck. Other existing licensing requirements may also apply.
The MELT course consists of 121.5 hours of standardized training covering the essential knowledge and skills to safely operate a semi-trailer truck. This ensures a higher standard of road safety for all users.
MELT is a one-time requirement. Once successfully completed, it does not need to be repeated.
Drivers who hold a valid Manitoba Class 1 licence issued before September 1, 2019 are not required to complete the MELT program and do not need to retest.
The MELT course includes a total of 121.5 hours of instruction, divided as follows:
