MELT Driving Lesson

MELT Program

Mandatory Entry-Level Training for Class 1 Licence

Mandatory training is required for drivers who want to obtain their Class 1 driver's licence. You must complete an approved Class 1 Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT) course before booking your road test to operate a semi-trailer truck. Other existing licensing requirements may also apply.

The MELT course consists of 121.5 hours of standardized training covering the essential knowledge and skills to safely operate a semi-trailer truck. This ensures a higher standard of road safety for all users.

MELT is a one-time requirement. Once successfully completed, it does not need to be repeated.

For Existing Class 1 Drivers

Drivers who hold a valid Manitoba Class 1 licence issued before September 1, 2019 are not required to complete the MELT program and do not need to retest.

Course Requirements

The MELT course includes a total of 121.5 hours of instruction, divided as follows:

  • 40 hours – In-class theory training
  • 40.5 hours - In-yard practical instruction
  • 41 hours – In-cab, behind-the-wheel driving
